“What Diabetes Camp Means to Me”
“Hi, my name is Marissa. I was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes when I was six years old. My first experience with Florida Diabetes Camp was the Family Weekend. This was great for me because I met my first friend with diabetes. Her name is Ali. Not only did I find a friend, but my parents became friends with her parents.
Two summers ago I went to Pee Wee Camp. This was so much fun. The counselors were very nice and we did lots of activities. The best part for me was I learned how to give myself my own injections of insulin.
Last summer I went to Camp Winona. There is a lake that is really great to swim in. They have a blob in the lake that most of the kids love playing on. It was great for me to spend time with other kids who are diabetic. At Camp Winona I was really proud of myself when I learned how to change my pump by myself!”
Playing and sharing adventures together, camp becomes part of a child’s development into a healthy, productive adult. At camp, children improve self-confidence and self-esteem, and learn the social skills of positive interaction that stay with them for a lifetime. What could be better for a child with diabetes?
